WZL, RWTH Aachen

Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen was founded as a Polytechnikum in 1870 with considerable support from local industry. It was established in 1948 as Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, the Institute of Technology of the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen in the new Federal Republic of Germany. Today the RWTH hosts some 32,000 students.

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) was founded in 1906 and is one of Europe’s largest university institutes of its kind. It carries out both basic and applied research projects. The goal of covering the whole field of production engineering in a single institute has lead to a wide spectrum of activities focused on product development and design, quality management, machine tools and automation, process planning, production and assembly. Close multi-disciplinary cooperation and a balanced mix of fundamental research characterize research at WZL and application related development of future solutions.

FIR, RWTH Aachen

Research Institute for Operations Management at Aachen University of Technology

The Research Institute for Operations Management at Aachen University of Technology (RWTH), is a non profit membership research organization. The institute currently has 145 industrial members representing a wide array of industries (from raw materials over production to service industries). The institute is a centre of excellence in the fields of rationalization and operations management and focuses on user-oriented research. Currently employing 40 PhD students it operates in national and international networks and cooperates with different associations and institutes. FIR develops models, methods and concepts which are implemented in cooperation with project partners in both industrial and service enterprises. The FIR is specialized in production management, supply chain design, green logistics, service management and information management.

POLITECNICO DI MILANO is the most important technical university in Italy and one of the biggest in Europe. Since 1850. POLIMI di Milano has been active in several scientific and technical fields. ESTARTA RECTIFICADORA S. COOP is an independent Spanish SME which has over 75 years experience in the conception, design and manufacturing of centreless grinding machines.
